The crisp snap in the morning air, the gentle rain of yellow leaves, the longing for a snuggly quilt, a crackling fire, a good book and a bowl of apple crisp. Don't you love fall? I am trying to find time to relish all of the best of it. Summer is always busy with gardens, family, camping, traveling and just life. With shorter days, less daylight it is easier to settle back into a sewing. With that in mind, I have a few classes scheduled. First up is an evening class September 28, to build a couple stuffed pumpkins from Nancy Halvorsen's new book Bittersweet. So easy, cute and perfect for autumnal decor. Of course this is the time of year we start making our Christmas lists. I know I plan on making some of the baskets and bowls featured in Sewing Pottery by Barbara Warholic. I can think of so many applications for this creative idea. Class is 9 AM on October 1. Most of you know I am enamored with my Accuquilt die cutter. I recently bought a Drunkard's Path die. I am planning on demonstating how easy it can be to piece curves on October 8, when I teach a "Holiday Spirits" table runner class, with die cut fabrics. Kits will be available.

The beginning of October means WSQ show at the Spokane fairgrounds can't be far off. Plan to visit at least one day either October 14, 15 or 16. When you do, stop by our booth and say "Hi."

With all the hard work you do, and all the running around for everyone else, you might think you deserve to be pampered--and you would be right! October 22 I am hosting a "Princess Mystery." This includes an all day class with the world debut of a new mystery pattern. If you choose your fabric prior to the class I can have it pre-cut, so you can get here and just start to sew. All pressing and "unsewing" will be done by yours truly. A delectable homemade meal including a mouthwatering dessert is included, not to mention neck and back massage by Lauren Manfull, a certified massage therapist. Class size is limited. Please contact me if you are interested in taking the class.

As the Holiday season approaches, my quilting schedule gets tight. I have room to book about 10 more slots for large projects before Christmas. The sooner you contact me, the more likely I can fit it into my schedule.

That about wraps it up for me for today. Be sure to check out my website at www.mrs-sewnsew.com next week. New changes should be in effect by then.

Is it Spring yet?

Did you feel how warm it was outside yesterday? It made me imagine leaves on the trees, sunshine, daffodils--oh, never mind. We still have a couple months of rain, snow and winter. Well, at least we can still sew. And that is what I have been doing. I have a head full of new pattern ideas and lots of luscious new fabrics that I "see" in this pattern or that, or as a bag, or a jacket, or... Trouble is finding the time to make all the fun projects I can imagine. I have been spending quality time at the long arm machine quilting on client quilts and practicing on my new Valentine "Love You" wall hanging. Talk about quick and easy and gets right to the point. Make for the upcoming February holiday, or to hang in a child's room or over the bed of your own true love. Pattern will be available next week.

I have been working hard getting ready for the "SUPER BOLT" sale coming up on Super Bowl Sunday, February 6. Look for a bunch of new fat quarters, half yard pieces and precuts, such as 2 1/2" strips and 6 1/2" squares. Plan on buying a few grab bags or stuff some scrappy sacks to spice up your stash. The challenge for me is simple being willing to part with all the fabric I would like to keep for "some day."

If you are thinking about doing the "Pie in the Sky" class on February 5, let me know. So far I have a lot of "I'd like to" and "maybe" but no definate sign ups. Just finished unpacking more of the Kim Diehl Simple Graces book if you would like to stop in and look at the proposed pattern.

New fabrics have been arriving the past couple of weeks. I have a few that make you think of easter eggs and baby chicks, just the right spring colors. And we are still adding to our batik collection.

Stop in soon and reacquaint yourself with all the reasons you are a quilter. Don't forget to plan on stopping in on Super Bowl Sunday. I will have surprise specials that day only. See you then!

Talk about a Quilting Revelation!

Last week was a Quilting Revelation for me. Gary and I traveled to southern Oregon so that I could take two classes from Karen McTavish. Friday, I excitedly joined 5 other women in a lovely quilting studio and learned the secrets of making Victorian Feathers (tall and skinny, tall and skinny!) After an evening strolling through a chilly Ashland to view the "First Friday" art exhibits (including aerial silk dancers at the Black Sheep Pub!) I arose on Saturday morning eager to join in the McTavishing class. It was eye opening for me to get to talk with women who approach "quilting" from the long arm artists point of view, rather from a quilt shop owner/piecing teacher point of view. The short cut lessons and "hands on" instruction are immeasurably better than reading about how to do a technique. Being certified to teach these techniques is an added bonus. Of course, I am practicing up a bit before I offer any classes.

Don't forget that Tuesday, January 18 I will make Step 2 of the mystery quilt available. Just stop by to pick up your copy. The first Valley Piecemaker's Quilt Show planning meeting will be 2 PM on January 20, here at Mrs. Sew-n-Sew's Quilt Shop. All club members are welcome to take part in the meeting. We encourage everyone to volunteer for some aspect of the quilt show and make it the best one ever--and that would be an accomplishment, since they have been great shows. Theresa Plank and I are the co-chairs this year, and since we both have businesses to run, we need all the help we can get!

Wanda finshed piecing my "Critters in the Corner" quilt while I was gone last week. It is pretty cute! Don't have time to quilt it just yet, but hope to get it done before the January 22 class. Let me know if you want to take the class. It is a quick, easy, beginner level quilt.

The "Pie in the Sky" class from Kim Diehl's latest book is scheduled for February 5. Lunch is going to be soup and pie, so plan on a full day. I need to know soon so that I can order books, if you are planning to attend. Remember, you can use fabric from your stash to create this scrappy quilt. February 6, Super BOLT Sunday, we open at 10 AM for our big sale. Mark your calendars.

Stay warm and dry, set aside time to quilt!

In Stitches,

Nona

Happy New Year!

I hope you are recovered from the overload of Christmas cookies, fudge, company, last minute shopping and late night sewing. As much fun as preparing for Christmas is, January and February are favorite months of mine precisely because Christmas is one again far, far off and I am free to sew projects I want to make for myself. Maybe I will make a bag or even a jacket with some of the rich new batik fabrics, or possibly I will design something using florals and pastels in anticipation of spring. There are still plenty of the Timeless Treasures batik "Stripteeze" sets of (40) 2 1/2" strips and a plethora of new children novelty fabrics, not to mention fishing and hunting fabrics. (BTW, if no one happened to "gift" you with one of the beautiful rayon batik scarves that arrived just before Christmas, we still have a few left. An inexpensive way to add spirit lifting color!) Wherever your sewing imagination is yearning to go, now is the time to explore!

I am beginning to feel like I know my way around on the long arm quilting machine. That is fortunate, because I am headed to Central Point, Oregon to take two classes from long arm quilting "rock star," Karen McTavish http://www.designerquilts.com/. I cannot even begin to explain how excited I am. Not only will I get to take the classes, (Victorian Feathers and McTavishing), I will also get to visit with our daughter, Eva and her fiance, Dustin. Gary and I leave January 5 and will be back to open on January 11.The shop will be in Wanda's capable hands, and will be open during regular hours. Stop in while I am gone and pick up Step 1 of my new Mystery Quilt pattern. This is a quilt I have designed, so no use trying to find it on line. There are nine steps and I will release them every other week, starting January 4. There will be a small design wall in the front of the shop that will display each step as the instructions are released. The quilt is called, "Indian Summer," and the directions are for two different sizes.

If you just want to get out of the house and make a fast and fun quilt, maybe for a grandchild birthday or new baby, come take my "Critters in the Corner" class on January 22 (9AM, $15.00 class fee, $5.00 to cut fabrics with die cutter) Store sample will be on display soon, but here is a sneak peak at four of the blocks together, featuring the hilarious jungle animals from Blank Textiles. All the block components can be cut on the shop die cutter, to minimize cutting time and maximize accuracy. Of course, this pattern works just as well for any other style of fabric, including batiks for a classy, modern look, or florals for something feminine and pretty.(Pattern will be available for purchase by January 22)

Each year, along with vowing to lose weight, exercise more and be nice to people that try our patience, most of us resolve to make quilts using only our stash. Well, if you mean it, gather your fat quarters and join me in a class for "Pie in the Sky." This pattern is on the cover of Kim Diehl's latest book, Simple Graces. http://www.kimdiehl.com/books.php It is the ultimate in scrappy quilts. Class meets February 5, starting at 9AM. Lunch (with pie, naturally) will be served. Purchase of this wonderful book is required for the class, so let me know ASAP if you want to attend. I only have a couple books in stock. Class fee is $25, book and materials 15% off if paid when you sign up.

Don't forget to circle February 6, Super BOLT Sunday, on your calendar. This is our 10th annual biggest sale of the year. I promise deep discounts on selected books and thread. Be on the look out for great buys on fabric for stash or backings. I am in the mood to clean out, so there will be over stuffed grab bags filled with fabric and other surprises. Mark downs will be store wide and include kits and pre-cuts. We will even have prices on some store samples, too. Plan on being here! (10 AM til 4 PM)

Maybe on of your resolutions is to learn Needle Turn Applique--well, you are in luck! Star Brown, recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq, has agreed to teach a beginner class of needle turn applique on February 12. It is a lot of work, though, and am still recuperating. When we got back, I decided that it was as good of a time as any to rearrange the entire store. As a result the "sale" shelf is newly restocked and overflowing with lots more fabric marked down to $3.99 per yard. Stop by and see what you can't live without!

Skies are low and grey, the wind is blowing golden cottonwood & aspen leaves across the wet roads, Hallowe'en is a few short days away and the full on onslaught of holiday commercials will begin as soon as the last election results are final. For sewing crafters and quilters it is time to gather or favorite tools, a couple of books loaded on our IPods or CD players and head to our sewing machines. Yes! This is my favorite time of year. I love the autumnal colors, the holiday preparations, "whose coming to your house?" discussions , and the inevitable "what are you making for Christmas?" questions. This year, (don't tell) I think I am making handbags. I love the new patterns with the big grommets, I love the handles, and I love Big Buttons! In fact, I like the buttons so much I just stocked some JHB buttons. Most of them are big--suitable for bags or jackets, but I do have a funky few that are smaller, including some tiny black ones that make wonderful "eyes" for snowmen or other critters.

New fabrics are in, too, along with apron patterns. Bags and aprons are two standby gift ideas, but don't forget about table runners, placemats, pillows and lap quilts. With the pre-cut "homemade rolls" or kits that have the strips/squares already cut for you, gift making takes less time than before. You can open the kit and get right to the fun part!

Remember, Saturday, November 13, we will have a free Demonstration Day on Christmas Stocking kits. I have the Accuquilt dies to cut out the stockings (and batting) as well as dies for the shapes to applique onto the stockings--or other holiday decorations such as wall hanging/banners and table toppers or placemats. Precut kits will be available and 10% off on Nov. 13 only! Don't spend time lamenting, however, start planning your fall and winter sewing projects! Every year once school is back in session, I start thinking about classes--taking them and giving them. I have some good ones planned.

Start off quick and easy and make Karen Montgomery's Easy Stripe Table Runner. This is a 5 seam table runner made with a border print. You will be amazed at how classy this looks. You will need a copy of the pattern, and a border print fabric. A 60 degree triangle is optional. I'll show you how to make it with or without. Class is Saturday September 18--door is open at 8:30--start sewing by 9 and be out of the door by noon with at least one runner top done! I'll have coffee and muffins. We continue with fast and fun projects on Oct 2 with my latest pattern, Company at the Cabin. You can do either the table runner or the placemats. The kit is 15% off if you take the class--all your strips are pre-cut in the kit. Same time line as on Sept. 18. Start early, end by noon or so. Classes are $15.00 each OR sign up for both for $25.00. Take both classes and have at least two Christmas gifts ready to wrap.

Take a break from classes the weekend of October 15, 16, & 17 and plan on visiting the WSQ show at the Spokane Fairgrounds. I am amazed every year at the quality of quilts displayed. Lots of demos and vendors. We will be there!

If you are wanting to learn to use the Millennium Long arm machine, I have a class scheduled for October 29 at 1 PM. From now until Christmas I have a special on purchasing time on the machine. Buy a 20 hour card for $200. Minimum rental time is 2 hours. Class required to be able to rent the machine. Give me a call or email (245-6656 or TheMissus@mrs-sewnsew.com) if you want details!

For those of you ready to take on a more challenging quilt, there is the Broken Star quilt class starting October 5. We will meet every other Tuesday evening for three classes. The book, More Favorite Traditional Quilts Made Easy by Jo Parrott is required for the class. I made this quilt ten years ago from a pattern in Quiltmaker magazine. I feel a bit more prepared to make it now, and many of you have requested a class, so let's do it!

Greetings Quilters!

Summer time is racing by. A couple weeks ago I had a fun loving quilt group from California join us at Mrs. Sew-n-Sew's for an all day workshop. While the heat was burning up the outside, we were in the shop laughing and cutting, sewing and learning new techniques. The "Twisted Threads" gals had requested a class making my Christmas Gingerbread Houses. Of course, I had to make a new sample, and add more stuff to it. The result was better than the first and we had a wonderful day stitching and talking, and eating.

Gary & I just returned from a beautiful weekend in Eureka, Montana. It was our first time being vendors at the Eureka Outdoor Quilt Show. What an awe inspiring setting! We were impressed by the beauty AND the incredible organization AND of course, the quilts. We met a bunch of new quilting friends. We found out that among quilters there is a universal love of batik fabrics and the convience of quilt kits. Our "Company at the Cabin" table runner and placemat kits were going like hotcakes! The quilt was pieced by members of the Valley Piecemakers of St. Maries/Benewah county. It is a beautiful scrappy quilt in reds and ecrus. I confess that I am quite pleased with the results on this quilt. Take a look at the photos and judge for yourself.

We still have room in the Shadow Applique Calendar class with Becky Clark. The class will be May 15 at 10 AM. Come in and look at the samples. And don't forget the "Learn to Sew" class starting May 12. We now have sewing machines available for use in our classes, so don't let the dread of packing up your own machine stop you from coming and taking a class. I'm afraid the Double Wedding Ring quilt class with Dana Kinder is now full. If you had your heart set on taking that class and just haven't gotten around to signing up, then please call & let me know and I will put you down on a list & try and get another class scheduled soon.

There has been a big demand for the kits from the "California Dreamin'" quilt featured in Fabric Trends Spring 2010 issue. I have fabric back ordered for more kits. There are still kits available for the "Animals on Parade" quilt featured in the same magazine and for the "How Much is That Doggie in the Window." Purchase either of those kits, and receive a free issue of the Fabric Trends Spring 2010 magazine.

New fabrics are due in again in the next couple weeks. Be looking for "Sweet Liberty" designed by Pat Sloan for P & B Textiles. I have a new table runner designed for use with that fabric. Who doesn't need a new patriotic themed table runner for the summer months?

That is all for now--Have a wonderful mother's day, whether or not you have children, we all have mothers!

Mrs. Sew-n-Sew's 10th Anniversary

Can you believe that May marks the 10 year mark since Nona and Gary started Mrs. Sew-n-Sew's Quilt Shop? We can hardly grasp that ourselves. How exhilarating to reach such a milestone. We are grateful for all the people, fabric, ideas and stories that have come through our doors in that time.
May 1st kicks off our month long anniversary celebration.
Firstly, bring in your Top Ten List of reasons to shop at Mrs. Sew-n-Sew's Quilt Shop and put them in the drawing for a basket full of quilting goodies, to be drawn on May 29.
The next thing is "Pick Your Own Sale Day." Choose any regular business day in May and come in and SAVE. You will have the option to shop at your leisure and enjoy 10% off storewide, or pick up a quick 10 fat quarters for $10.00. If you enjoy making quilts with the jelly rolls, or 2 1/2 inch wide strips, pick up scrappy jelly rolls for $10.00 each. Select flannels will be 50% off. Packaged batting is 15% off. This is just the beginning. Here is what you need to do:

1. Come to Mrs. Sew-n-Sew's Quilt Shop during regular business hours.
2. Sign in with your mailing address and email (if you have one).
3. Pick up the printed flyer outlining all the sale prices.
4. Shop and Save!
(One shopping sale day per customer, this lasts from May 1 through May 29, 2010. Of course the best selection will be early in the month.)

Next up are CLASSES! May 1 is Long Arm Demo Day on the APQS Millenium machine. If you are undecided about taking the long arm class, this is the day to come in and "test drive" the machine. I have a little more experience under my belt now (about 75 quilts so far!) and I am a bit more confident in showing off what "Millie" can do. I will have her loaded up with muslin so you can try your hand at long arm quilting.
If you think you would like to quilt your own quilts, you will have an opportunity to learn how to use the long arm machine on May 8. Long Arm Machine Quilting Class is $50.Be sure to take advantage of this! Long arm quilting takes practice, so take the class then bring your charity quilts, comfort quilts, Quilts of Valor and quilt them for only $5.00 per hour during May (3 hour minimum rental.)
If you aren't even quilting yet, or know a young person that would like to learn to sew, there will be a two session, "I Can't Believe I am Sewing" class, May 12 and May 19. I will have three sewing machines available for use. The class is $30.00 and includes a book. We will begin at the very beginning, learning about how to properly use and maintain a sewing machine. The second session we will make a pillow case. Kits will be available for purchase at a discount for class members. Students must be at least 12 years old.
Have you been in and looked at the Shadow Applique Calendar Holders that Becky Clark made? If not, come on in and take a peek at the samples. Becky will be teaching a class on how to make the calendar holder on May 15. Class fee is $20 if you have a copy of the Quiltmaker Magazine from Jan/Feb 2010. If you have that issue, be sure to bring it with you. The fee is $25.00 if you do not have a copy of the magazine.
I know how you all love the Double Wedding Ring quilt design. A customer came in and showed me one she was making from a class at "A Heart Like Yours Quilt Shoppe" in Spokane Valley. The arcs are made and machine appliqued onto the blocks--NO CURVED SEAMS needed! I was impressed and got the name of the teacher, Dana Kinder, and she has agreed to come teach the class on May 22. The class size is limited to six. Fee for the class is $30. and you must also purchase the acrylic template set, which is $15.00. I already have two signed up, so call or email me soon to take advantage of this class. I will also be getting names of those interested in Dana coming back to teach a Lone Star Christmas tree skirt class later in the summer.
If you haven't noticed, we have a quilt in the window from Spring 2010 Fabric Trends magazine. I designed the quilt using Jim Shore's Animals on Parade fabric line from Quilting Treasures. I still have a few kits left and will discount them 10% from now until May 29, and include the magazine free! That is a savings of $15.98! Don't spend too much time thinking about that one!
Enjoy the lovely spring weather. The longer hours of daylight mean more evening sewing time.

New year, new Class calendar

Where did January go? Seems like I was rushing to get Christmas things in the mail just a few days ago, and all the sudden, January is nearly history.

I have been preoccupied since Christmas finishing up the directions for my latest quilt, "How Much is That Doggie in the Window?" The quilt is beginner friendly, but each block is different, so it was like writing instructions for 12 quilts! I will be featuring it in an ad in Fabric Trends magazine, Spring 2010 issue. If you haven't seen it, drop by and take a look.

Speaking of Fabric Trends, Spring 2010 issue, I will have a quilt design in that magazine. It features Jim Shore's "Animal Parade" fabric, by Quilting Treasures. I had fun making the quilt in a short amount of time.

Like most of us, I have been enjoying the milder winter, even though I miss the beautiful snowy landscape. Clear roads, however, make it easier to get out and go--maybe take a class!

Now that I am finally getting around to doing a newsletter/calendar, I have to start with February! First off, is the Super Bolt Sunday sale on Feb. 7, starting at 11 AM and running until 5 PM. I'm not giving away ALL the sales info, but I will say, if you need to stock up on thread, now would be the time! Also, I need to make room on the shelves, so any bolts with 5 yards or less, will be deeply discounted. Next up, on Feb. 13, is another opportunity to learn how to use the APQS Millenium Long Arm Quilting machine to quilt your own quilts. The initial investment for the class can save you hundreds of dollars in the long run if you are the kind of quilter that turns out a lot of quilts. By the time the second half of February rolls around, we are all ready for a hint of spring and a little pampering. Indulge yourself with a catered meal, massage and a quilt class all in one day. On February 21, starting at 1 PM, you can get all that and more. The quilt is one I designed and is call "Weaving Western" although yours does not have to have western themed fabrics. This quilt works up quickly, with some simple tricks and techniques that may be new to you. Class space is limited to 6, the cost is $50.00 per person and kits will be available.

February 27, Sandy Berg will be here to teach a class on making her pattern, "Bag 'em and Go." Sandy has designed a wonderful bag for taking to classes or on retreats. It features pockets that hold rulers and squares, and ironing surface and lots of room for projects. The class is from 10 AM until 4 PM and is a bargin at $25.00. See the sample when you sign up. March 3 will be the first class date of another beginner's class. If you have friends or family that have admired your quilting and would like to learn to do it themselves, clue them in to the date so they can sign up.

If you are looking forward to summer, or just like patriotic type fabrics, We just got in Moda's "Nautical and Nice." Thee is still time to make your sweetie a Valentine's pillowcase, or a table runner out of suitable fabrics.

Still time to make great gifts!

December is well underway, but there is still time to make wonderful gifts for family and friends. All the ingredients for gift making are right in Mrs. Sew-n-Sew's Quilt Shop. Aprons are a perennial favorite, as are hand bags, you can also whip up a table runner in a couple hours, or hem some tea towels, maybe embellish them with some fat rick rack. Pillowcases are quick and easy gifts. If you are searching for the perfect gift for a quilter--well, we have a variety of pre-cuts, such as fat quarters, "homemade" rolls (jelly rolls) and charm packs. Kits also make great gifts as well as little scissors, rulers, sewing tins for storing notions, a selection of thread, bobbin holders and quilting books. Still looking for a unique Christmas present? We have a selection of dried flowers, grown and arranged by our neighbor, Elizabeth Taylor. These are reasonably priced and last forever.

Speaking of books, we have Alex Anderson's "Start Quilting." This is a wonderful book for any aspiring quilter or new quilter that wants to have success building quilts. What else do you need or eye popping quilts? Well, fabric, of course! And, boy oh boy, do we have some awesome new fabrics! Just in yesterday is the latest from Laurel Burch, Dancing Horses. I am attaching a photo, but believe me, it doesn't do justice to the richness of this collection. I had to unwrap this one quickly just after it came in, so I could cut it for a customer. I know this one won't be around long. If horses are your animal of choice, I also have another line called "Hey Cowboy" that has nice horse fabric. Jungle animals may be more to your liking, and "Safari So Good" is adorable. My other current favorite is "Housework Whenever" from In the Beginning Fabrics. This retro looking fabric has delightful phrases such as, "A clean house is the sign of a broken sewing machine" and "When I learned how to sew I forgot how to cook." Be sure to check this one out.

Saturday, December 5 is the annual Christmas Stroll in St. Maries. The Masons will be out in front of Mrs. Sew-n-Sew's selling elephant ears, corn dogs and other delicious smelling fare. Stop in and get a 50% discount on all Coats & Clark thread, Gutermann thread, and Mettler poly-sheen thread. Patterns will be 20% off. Gift certificates are available and if you are interested in learning quilting on the long arm machine, you can also purchase a gift certificate for that. Discounts also available on 20 hour rental cards for the long arm. See you Saturday!

Christmas is A-comin'!

I know, I know. It has been over 2 months since the last time I posted. Well, remember that APQS Millennium Long Arm Quilting machine I mentioned, hmm? That is one reason I haven't been on here. I am having a blast learning how to operate and perfect my long arm quilting. I have taught one class already for people that would like to rent the machine and quilt their own quilts. My next class to learn on the long arm is scheduled for December 12, starting at 9 AM. It is filling quickly, so call if you are interested. Of course I am already quilting for people. If you want something quilted before Christmas, now is the time to get in on my "50 for $50" special. I am quilting my first 50 customer quilts for $50 or less, depending on the size. Hurry, already 20+ quilts are spoken for.

Speaking of classes, we had a terrific time on November 1 in the French Braid tree skirt class. Good conversation, good food, wonderful massage by Lauren Manfull, and amazing projects. I know I am looking forward to putting my tree skirt around my Christmas tree. For those of you that couldn't make this class, I am scheduling one for January 2010. That is right, NEXT YEAR. We will have plenty of time to complete before next Christmas. I am adding a photo, so you can be inspired. Because of the busy season, I only have one other class scheduled for December. We will be making Christmas stockings on December 5. I have a couple of patchwork designs as well as a chenille sample. Stop in and see. Class is $15. Even if you have stockings, these are quick and easy for gift bags. Fill one for a favorite someone with fancy soap, hand lotion, small quilt kit or whatever you can imagine.

This time of year, we all have so many things to keep us busy. With Thanksgiving coming a bit late this year, you may be pressed for last minute gifts, or hostess gift ideas. Stop by and check out the vintage Christmas toweling from Moda. Think Christmas cards from the '40's with round cheeked snowmen (and women) and Santa Claus. These are wonderful for making tea towels, cloth napkins, a bag for wine, or for using on an apron. We will be making some of these projects to have on display the week after Thanksgiving. We also have more of the Maywood "Warm Woolies" flannels in, as well as woodsy looking flannel, if you are planning rag quilts or pajamas. I got in my re-order of Blank Textiles "Barnyard" fabrics, with the farm, the cows and the horses, along with chicken wire. Great pillowcases for country kids of any age. We also just got some Juvenile jungle fabrics from P & B in warm earthy colors.

Gary and I will be in Oregon for Thanksgiving, and will be closed part of the coming week. The store will be open on "black Friday" from 10 AM til 4 PM, closed on Saturday. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

A is For Apron, B is for Bag

Have you felt the nip in the air once the sun goes down? And rain--it poured at our house Labor Day. The tops of the cottonwood trees are changing color and kids are back in school, all indications that sewing season is in full swing. Watching kids walk past the shop window with their new backpacks made me wonder if they were learning "A is for Apron, and B is for Bag." That is what I am thinking with all the lovely new fabrics and patterns. Aprons and bags have been especially popular this summer. The "retro" look is definately in fashion, both in fabrics and the design of aprons. Big and "funky" probably best describes some of the bag patterns. Whatever your personal style, we likely have a pattern to suit. For those of you looking ahead to Christmas, aprons and bags make much appreciated gifts.

I hope the majority of you made it to the Valley Piecemakers' Quilt show this past weekend. What a lot of magnificent projects! I wasn't on the Quilt Show committee this year, but I did see a lot of customers and field some phone calls. If you were able to make it to the quilt show, chances are you noticed Barb Mayfield demonstrating her APQS Millennium long arm machine. Want to know a secret? Gary and I are working on the logistics of purchasing one of those machines! It is our hope that within 4-6 weeks we will have one set up and a schedule of classes to teach people how to use it. Gary and I both plan on learning long arm quilting and eventually offering our services, as well as having the machine available to rent here in the shop. Details will be forthcoming, as soon as I know them! In the meantime, let me know if you would be interested in taking a class and learning how to quilt your own projects.

Sizzlin Summer Sunday Sew-In Review

Boy, did we have fun on Sunday!

We had a terrific quilting class.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the food.

After a couple hours of cutting and sewing, we were all appreciative of the massage by Lauren Manfull.

We had both experienced and beginner quilters.

Lots of visiting and joking going on and the opportunity to see how different people view the same patterns.

Class participants were excited to find a "goodie bag" containing a book, a spool of Aurifil varigated thread and some wonderful hand cream. Gary and I had a great time, visiting with the vendors, studying the quilts and enjoying the setting in the historical village of Eureka, Montana.

I can't remember when I last went to a quilt show to just look at quilts rather than be a vendor.

The things I appreciated the most about the show, (other than the quilts, of course):

There was a limited number of vendors. This is important, because a show should strive for variety, but attendees only have so many dollars to spend.

There was also a food vendor with scrumptious Mexican food.

Another big plus, in my book, especially for an outdoor show, were the "Quilt Cops." These volunteers watched over the quilts, in case the wind blew one down, or to keep anyone with greasy hands from touching them, or to answer any questions.

From the outside looking in, this appeared to be a well run quilt show.

The town of Eureka obviously was supportive of this visual feast. Quilts hung on both sides of the street in front of all the businesses. Quilt junkies were crowded into shops and eating establishments.

I was surprised that so many of the quilts were for sale.

All in all it was a wonderful day and a worthwhile get away. If you can, plan to attend next year!

In stitches,

Nona
Mrs. Sew~n~Sew

Luscious Batiks & New Products

Are we in the "dog days"of summer yet? Feels like it here. Very hot days give us a good excuse to go sew. Put a couple lemon or lime wedges in a glass of ice water and head to the sewing room. Be sure to aim a fan straight at your chair. Crank up the tunes, or put a book on CD into the machine and you will while away the hot hours without breaking a sweat.

If you are in need of some inspiration, I just received some very luscious batiks from Princess Mirah Bali Batiks. Don't have a camera handy today, but stop by to see for yourself. We all know that buying fabric from the internet isn't nearly as satisfying as petting it in person first.

We now have a good stock of polyester fiberfill. This past Saturday we had our "Hope You Can Make It For Christmas" class. What fun! This class was on constructing pillows or pillow covers (for sofa or floor pillows you already have.) In honor of "Christmas in July" we made winter pillows with a cheery "Ho, ho, ho" on them. Some of us are making wall hangings with the same motif. Naturally, we also thought of other people that would like our pillows and needed more fiberfill, so, I ordered it, and it is now here.

Seems that no matter what time of year it is, we have to do laundry!
I have recently stocked a couple of items to make that chore easier. In stock is Retayne that stops dye from bleeding, Magic Wand and Grandma's Secret Spot Remover for stubborn spots and Dye Grabber Cloths, which grabs & absorbs loose dye in your wash.
Speaking of laundry--which is only fun if you are washing new fabric--have you tried the Mary Ellen's Best Press spray starch? I have to say I am sold on this product. I only had to try it a few times to see how it smooths fabric, doesn't leave flakes, and makes cutting and piecing on the bias so much easier. I now have smaller bottles of this product, the price is easier on the pocketbook.

Gary and I are heading to Eureka, Montana tomorrow. The quilt show is on Saturday, and I plan on wandering through all the quilts, stopping when I want, and reading all the papers on each one. I don't get to do that when we are vendors at shows. Usually, I only see the quilts on the way to the restroom! We will take photos and I will write my impressions next week.
In Stitches,
Nona
Mrs. Sew~n~Sew

Sizzlin' Summer Sunday Sew-In

I just opened an order I received from one of my distributors. You choose one of four different projects from my book, Top This! and come prepared to be pampered.

Not only will we have a blast sewing & chatting, we'll also have a fancy catered dinner and a 10 minute neck massage by Lauren Manfull of Bodyworks Therapeutic.

Each person receives a "goodie bag" worth more than the cost of the class! To help you decide I am including a few snapshots of the possible projects.

Remember, feel free to change the suggested colors in your project. You don't have to make it look like mine! For example, I am planning on making another version of the "August Sunshine," only this time, I am making the flower into a daisy, with a yellow center & maybe a light batik or white on cream for the petals. I have a cute fabric with small daisies I could use for the background. Or, how about a purple coneflower, or any color you choose for the flower. You can forget about the checkerboard borders if you want, and use a border stripe. The possibilities are endless.

I have also thought about making "Jack the Runner" without Jack's face. Maybe you could applique a pumpkin vine & a couple leaves, and have a perfect table runner for the whole fall.

Don't forget the Christmas in July fabric sale this Saturday, July 25.

Come on in & see what is happening at Mrs. Sew-n-Sew's!

In Stitches!

Nona

Mrs. Sew~n~Sew

Christmas in July

Boy, it is hot out there!

I hate to be the one to remind you, but exactly 5 months from this Saturday is Christmas Day! Yes! Can you believe it?

To celebrate that we still have a bit of lazy summer ahead, but to acknowledge the inevitable, we will be having a bit of Christmas this Saturday.

I will open all the new Christmas fabric and put it out for sale. You can enjoy 20% off previous Christmas collections & Christmas themed books.

This sale is for 1 day only, so mark it--like Christmas--on your calendar.

This Saturday is also another of our "Hope You Can Make it For Christmas" classes. We have had a wonderful time meeting each month and getting through our Christmas lists by making creative, unique gifts for our loved ones. The best part is when December blows in, we will be ready and can enjoy the holiday. No more late night sewing!

Today, Gary and I have been working on making a few videos to post on our updated website.

Honestly, there is absolutely NO chance whatsoever in me getting my own TV program. I crack up with nervousness just trying to introduce myself in front of a camera.

If that isn't enough, I am also preparing for my "Sizzling Summer Sunday Sew-In" on August 9.

I have lined up a:

massage therapist

prepared a display of the featured quilts that we will be working on

and I have made up some kits

Without much advertising at all, I already have half the class full. If you are vacillating about whether or not to sign up, now is decision time!

Flip through your copy of "Top This!" You choose one of the four following patterns:

"Star Crystals"

"Bears in These Woods"

"August Sunshine"

"Jack the Runner"

Kits will be available, but you are welcome to bring your own fabric. There will be goodie bags with a total value of more than you pay for the class. Not to mention the catered dinner and the massage.

Class cost is $40.

Call now to reserve your spot.

In Stitches,

Nona
Mrs. Sew~n~Sew

Quilt Show in Troy, Montana

Happy Fourth of July! As has been the custom for me and Gary this past 7 years or so, we have spent 4th of July on Troy, MT. Every year the people of Troy put on what they call "An Old Fashion 4th of July" celebration. The Tender Loving Quilters' show is the 3rd and the 4th of July each year. Gary and I attend as vendors. What a great time catching up with the warm and friendly people here. As you can imagine, quilting is a popular hobby in this part of the country. The winters are long and cold here! Gary got some shots of the parade this morning, while I was busy straightening our booth and, in the bit of quiet time I had, sewing. It is always fun to see what quilters are doing in different regions. This show had several "French Braid" quilts, and typical for this area, a number of quilts with a northwoods theme. The quilt show is over for this year, and as always, we had a great time. We are packed and loaded up, ready to pull out for St. Maries in the wee hours of the morning. After unloading fabric and goods at the shop tomorrow, we get ready to leave on Monday morning for a trip to southern Oregon & the Bay area of California to visit kids/grandkids and other relatives. Of course, I hope to stretch my legs in a quilt shop or two. I will be sure to let you know.

Quilt Conversation & Casserole Carrier

Had a terrific class today. Continuing with the "Hope You Can Make it for Christmas" classes that I have created as a monthly "Christmas Club." The idea is to work on making Christmas gifts a little each month, and by December, you just have to wrap and relax! To date we have done a table runner, a purse, pocketed wall hanging, Chef's apron & hat for the guys and today, a casserole carrier and pot holders. I am writing each of the patterns, and having a class helps to test the directions--providing that people actually READ the directions. We laughed about that, too. We all conceded that most of us take a pattern and look at the diagrams and pictures and get started, without reading all the way through, as we know we should.

I'll post more next week. I am packing them up and shipping them off on Monday. We have the original samples of Romancing Red, Sunday Stroll, The Picnic and Apple A Day, as well as the new holiday one called Christmas Tree. Patterns and kits are available. These have been popular nationwide, and I am proud to have exhibited them here. I am well stocked on a number of the Bigfork Bay Cotton Company patterns, including the realistic wildlife patterns by Toni Whitney. I will be packing up and taking those to Troy, Montana for their quilt show, so stop in this weekend if you have been thinking about getting one.

New books: Big box in from my supplier yesterday contained Kim Diehl's new book as well as a marvelous book of what to do with 2 1/2" wide strips. If you are a Nancy Halvorsen fan, (and who isn't??) I just received her latest Christmas pattern book called "I Believe." Some folks have been asking about the "Around the Block" books by Judy Hopkins that came out several years ago. They have been out of print for some time, however, Judy has just released a reissue called "501 Rotary Cut Blocks," which combines most of what was in her other three books. This is a reference book and is priced as such, but it is invaluable when planning and designing your own quilts or if you are in charge of coming up with blocks of the month for a quilt guild!

In stitches,

Nona
Mrs. Sew~n~Sew's

Cutting Kits & Stacking Fabric

Happy mid-week, fellow quilters!

In spite of the weather predictions of a hot & sunny day, I am starting out by cutting kits for rag time flannel quilts. Many of you have made these warm, cuddly, kid friendly quilts. Most of us have complained over the endless clip, clip, clipping to get the curled flannel edges. Well, let me tell you--I have a die for my AccuQuilt Cutter that cuts the blocks with the edges already clipped. This is not cheating, by the way, it is simply smart quiltmaking. These kits are quick to make up. Kits for quick quilts are a natural for summer, when our sewing time has to be taken in fits and spirts.

Yesterday I received a big box of new fabric. I am so excited about the "Ethnic Echoes" by Blank Textiles in indigo. My secret is, I am planning on putting several projects on hold so I can make myself a summer dress and maybe a camp shirt or two out of these fabrics. The indigo blues are so cool and crisp looking for summer. Of course, my mind is playing with quilt patterns for this line as well. Check these out, because they will probably sell out as quickly as the "Pixie Patch" sunflower fabric. Another popular fabric, also by Blank, has been the "Barnyard" line, with goofy round eyed cows, chickens & pigs. Well, they added more to that line, and I just receive grinning horses, nervous looking sheep and a fresh bolt of the barnyard print. If you forgot to pick up a gift for a baby shower, come get a pre-cut kit out of "Barnyard" for my "2 Hour (More or Less)" baby quilt. We also have the kits pre-cut in the lap quilt size.

Gary & I will be leaving July 2 to go to Troy, Montana to be vendors at their quilt show, held July 3 & 4. We get home July 5 long enough to unload, then we will be gone for the entire following week, visiting our kids in Oregon & California. I plan on posting at least once or twice during our trip, so watch for something unexpected!

When we return I will be in full planning mode for my upcoming "Sizzling Summer Sunday Sew-In" class. I am holding a class on August 9 from 1 PM in the afternoon until 9 PM that evening. I will be teaching four different projects from my book, "Top This!" I tentatively plan on teaching: "Star Crystals" --a beginner level paper piecing class, "Bears in These Woods,""August Sunshine," and "Jack the Runner." The day will feature a catered supper, goodie bags with a gift certificate, door prizes & other special treats. The cost is $40.00 and I am limiting the class to ten people, so sign up SOON!

In stitches,

Nona

Mrs. Sew~n~Sew's

Easy Quilts and Quilt Kit ideas

A couple of years ago a sales rep showed me "Jelly Rolls"--40 precut 2 1/2" strips neatly rolled up. My initial (and incorrect reaction) was, "Who needs this??!" Being a REAL quilter, I would cut my own 2 1/2" strips when I needed them, thank you very much. Now, however, I am older and I hope, wiser, and my eyes have been opened to the myriad possibilities of the

2 1/2" strip. Books, patterns and magazines have all featured quick patterns highlighting these strips. These are fun! It is like wanting a quick dessert and using a cake mix instead of building everything from scratch--it is still yours, it is still "handmade" but quicker and, dare I say it, smarter. I now make my own 2 1/2" strips, using my AccuQuilt die cutter, bundle them in groups of 40 strips, and roll them up. I call mine "Nona's Homemade Rolls." What I like best about these my homemade rolls is that I can select from a number of different fabric lines, giving my finished product the look that says, "I collected these fabrics for a long time." The current trend toward scrappy quilts meshes perfectly with Homemade Rolls. I am now writing my second quilt pattern for using the 2 1/2" strip rolls. My first design is called, "Fixin' Fence" and features a delightful cowboy kid print and coordinates as well as random very bright fabrics. I love the graphic design that is created by the black print. The best part is this is a easy quilt, pieced in just a few hours. Don't be fooled into thinking this design can only be made with juvenile prints. This would look terrific in florals, replacing the black print with a bright yellow or peachy pink. How about in red, white & blues, with a solid navy where the pattern shows the black print. Be sure to look a little closer at the "homemade rolls" next time you stop by. It is just the thing to life your spirits on gloomy days.

In stitches,

Nona

Mrs. Sew~n~Sew's

Wildlife Pillow Kits

The summer season has definately started. Already we are seeing tourists in the shop. June is usually when folks return to St. Maries for class reunions or weddings or graduations or even camping "up the Joe." This time of year there is always a lot of interest in Gary's outdoor patterns. Fortunately, we now have the large floor pillow patterns printed and kitted up. The pillows are made with Nu-Suede, a polyester microfiber fabric. Very comfortable. These are an easy fusible web project with a little sewing. Perfect project for the occasional stormy afternoon.

In stitches,

Nona

Mrs. Sew~n~Sew's

Quilt Shop update

NEW! IMPROVED! 75% MORE AT THE SAME PRICE! We have all seen those claims on everything from laundry detergent to breakfast cereal. Very often they are unsubstantiated. Starting today, however, we are aiming to make those claims a reality at Mrs. Sew-n-Sew's Quilt Shop and on the http://www.mrs-sewnsew.com/ website as well. More fabric, more kits, more user friendly access. With a fine tutor, I am hoping to find my way around the World Wide Web of Quilting.

If you haven't been in for awhile, you need to come by and see the new layout and the newly painted walls. The bright yellow just makes the quilts "pop." I have also been cleaning out 9 years accumulation of scraps, unfinished projects and the like. I am striving for a less cluttered environment--not an easy thing for a quilter. We are using our AccuQuilt cutting system to make kits and I am designing new ones that will feature the precut pieces. Keep checking back to find out what is going on!

In Stitches,

Nona
Mrs. Sew~n~Sew's
